Disco Demands

Not really a big fan of retro compilations, but the London/Berlin based label BBE (disclaimer: they are my office mates) usually releases compilations with material that is an evidence for good musical knowledge and deep digging compilers.
BBE is running now since 15 years, and the Disco Demands series since the year 2000. Now the full series will be put together on one release containing 5 CDs and vinyl, compiled by Al Kent. Plus a cover which makes you buy the physical product for sure (although in USA there will be a sticker on certain parts).
Some amazing music from South African house producer DJ Sbu from his new released album Sound Revival Vol. 1. Perfect to celebrate the 2nd half of the week (or whatever you feel to celebrate right now).

Ovaherero skulls finally to be returned to Africa
Finally: over 100 years after the Genocide of German troops in Namibia the stolen bones of the victims who where sitting at the Charité Klinik in Berlin for racial research and measuring will be returned to Namibia. Why took it so long for Germany and Charité to return these skulls - just to keep the myth that Germany has no colonial past?
For the repatriation of the mortal remains of Herero and Nama, who were killed by German troops during the Genocide of 1904-08, an official delegation from the Republic of Namibia is expected in Berlin. The remains from the numerous German “concentration camps” in the former “German Southwest Africa” were sent over one hundred years ago to the pathological institute in Berlin and to other German research institutions for “scientific measuring.” “By using shards of glass,” so says the original subtitle of the contemporary photography pictured above, the skulls had to be “freed of flesh and made ready” by the wives of those murdered before being sent off.

A Wave of Tropical Bass Hits Rio
Tropical Bass is growing and hits Rio de Janeiro. Rio Times says:
For the uninitiated, tropical bass is a catchall name for bass-heavy dance music that generally originates in tropical climates. Brazil’s main contribution to the mix is funk carioca, the digital hip-hop beat that ricochets all over Rio.
Other examples include Angolan kuduro, South African kwaito, pan-Latino cumbia and reggaetón, Jamaican dancehall, Trinidadian soca, West African hip-hop, Ivorian coupé decalé, and Colombian champeta.
All of these musical styles are, in general, digitally produced – though more traditional cumbia is performed by bands – and draws heavily on hip-hop aesthetics as well as house and techno beats. Kwaito, for example, is the South African name for house music, and often features rappers in native languages like Zulu.
DJs, mostly based in North America and Europe but increasingly in South America, have started to connect the musical dots between these disparate sounds. While a variety of names have been proposed – global ghettotech and world music 2.0, for example – tropical bass has become one of the most prevalent.
Couldn’t say it any better. For more on that genre browse to our webside TropicalBass.com.

Bending the soca beat
Interesting reflection of soca from a Trinidadian view although I think they are mixing two things here.
Some impressions from our 3-day bike tour Passau - Vienna following river Donau on the Danube bike trail. Really can recommend this: perfect bike roads, no or almost no traffic, places to eat and sleep every kilometer, beautiful nature and awesome landscape. Also perfect for fixed gear bikes.
